What this course teaches you to do
- Looking at two coins, be able to distinguish between "same type" and "same die".
- Read the notation of a die chart (obverse: Roman numerals, reverse: Arabic numerals) and link individual specimens by their dies.
- Calculate n/d from the number of specimens and the number of dies, and determine if the sample is usable for estimation.
- Explain the range and assumptions when estimating the mintage from the number of dies.

- What is a die? — The tool that strikes, and the coin that is struckFlaws on a die are transferred to the coin. We count the obverse dies, which wear out more slowly.
- Obverse and reverse are separate tools — one obverse die is paired with multiple reverse dies.The obverse lasts longer, and the reverse is replaced first. 31 obverse dies to 84 reverse dies.
- Identifying the same die — “similar” and “identical”"Similar" refers to the type, "same" refers to the die. The determining factors are the correspondence of scratches, chips, and the position of the letters.
- Die Chains — Connecting individual coins to reconstruct the striking sequenceShared dies link individual coins, while type numbers and re-engraving determine the sequence.
- How many dies were used? — The observed number and the original numberThe number of dies counted is the number observed. If there are dies known from a single specimen, there must also be dies yet to be discovered.
