Claims Supported by This Source
- Each week, the CFPB sends over 100,000 complaints about financial products and services to companies for a response. If another agency is more appropriate, it forwards the complaint and provides a notification.
- Most companies respond within 15 days. If the case is in progress, they will provide a final response within 60 days.
- You can provide feedback on the company's response within 60 days.
- It asks if you have contacted the company directly before filing a complaint. For errors in credit information, the law (15 U.S.C. 1681i) requires you to first file a dispute directly with the credit reporting agency.
- What to include: The most important dates, amounts, and correspondence with the company, as well as supporting documents (such as statements, up to 50 pages). You usually cannot submit a second complaint for the same issue.
- When submitting on behalf of someone else, disclose your relationship to that person. Companies typically require written authorization with the person's signature.
- The complaint data, excluding personally identifiable information, is published in the public Consumer Complaint Database.
How to read the verification levels. "Read Through" means the source was read in its entirety. "Bibliography & Abstract Read" means the bibliographic information and abstract were confirmed. "Via Course Material" means the source was referenced through the textbook or course text. The "Text Hash" is the SHA-256 of the main text from the publisher's page, excluding tags and whitespace, used to detect if the source has been modified.
