500 escudos note, genuine and void pair

Above, a note stamped DUPLICADO—void; below, a genuine one. Both bear the serial 1K 02201. Alves dos Reis did not counterfeit: with forged credentials he had real notes printed at the real printer from the real plates. Paper and plates were genuine; all that was missing was the authority to issue. No other piece of paper shows so precisely where the truth of money resides. The two are displayed side by side in the British Museum.
