A new Spanish gold coin introduced in 1537. Fineness of twenty-two carats, sixty-eight pieces to a mark. It became the standard for subsequent gold coins.

A new gold coin introduced by Spain in 1537. Fineness of twenty-two carats, sixty-eight pieces from one mark of gold. It was modeled on the French écu and the Italian scudo, and became the standard for subsequent Spanish gold coins.

⚠ The name means "shield." It later survived as the name of the Portuguese currency unit.
