There is no single cause, but a recurring scenario in monetary history is when "the need for payment becomes greater than the substance backing the currency."

⚠ It is not a simple matter of it occurring just because the quantity of money has increased. Even with the same quantity, prices will move if the speed at which people spend it increases.
