Even if the edges are shaved, the face value remains unchanged. The shaved metal is kept by the clipper. As hammer-struck coins had irregular edges, clipping was difficult to detect.

The technique of adding reeding to the edge made this practice easier to detect. If the reeding is damaged, it is evident that the coin has been clipped.
