Shaving metal from the edge of a coin to steal it.

Even if the edges are shaved, the face value remains unchanged. The shaved metal is kept by the clipper. As hammer-struck coins had irregular edges, clipping was difficult to detect.

This practice was stopped by the technique of adding reeding to the edge. If the reeding is damaged, it is evident that the coin has been clipped.
