When struck using a screw press or water wheel, each coin achieves a uniform thickness and roundness. This uniformity allows for a pattern to be added to the edge. If the edge has a pattern, it becomes evident if it has been clipped.
⚠ This technology was adopted not to "make them beautiful" but to "prevent clipping." It was an advancement in security, not in appearance.
