In 1897, the striking of the 8 Reales coin at the Mexico City Mint finally came to an end. This marked the end of a 360-year history for a denomination that began in a colonial mint and circulated the world, its nicknames changing from the Spanish Dollar to the Eagle Dollar. The principal unit of account had shifted to the decimal one peso, introduced by the emperor and inherited by the republic. The piece shown is a one peso dated 1901, which inherits the design of the Phrygian cap and rays. A currency that had drawn its strength from its consistency ended its role when the times themselves changed.
