The Belgian five-franc silver coin (1869, Leopold II). Exactly to the standard of the Latin Monetary Union: 25 grams gross, 22.5 grams of fine silver. On the face, the profile of Leopold II, king of the Belgians; on the back, the legend 'strength through unity' and a crowned shield with a lion. The face on one side is not France's, nor is the name of the country, yet the diameter, the weight and the fineness match to the last fraction — which is why it passed across the border at par. The union was precisely this agreement of dimensions.
