Décime (Dupré type)

A décime of the Dupré type, struck at the Strasbourg mint under the Directory. Church metal seized in the dechristianisation campaign of the autumn of 1793 was melted down for the costs of war. Bronze bells became cannon, and also small change such as this décime. Metal that had announced prayer took the form of a small copper coin of the Republic. The face carries a design from the hand of Dupré, on a piece born out of the bronze of bells.
