1 escudo silver coin
Early republic (1910s) ・ silver ・ 20th century ・ Portuguese Republic

The revolution of 1910 toppled the monarchy, and the unit changed from the réis to the escudo. On the new silver coin, not a king's portrait but the goddess of the Republic; on the reverse, the crown is gone from the laurel-wreathed shield. When the regime changes, the money changes—the last great instance of a pattern this country had repeated since the Middle Ages.
