In 1867, Greece adopted the standards of the Latin Monetary Union into its national law and signed the declaration of accession in 1868, but could not participate as a full member. Greek coins of the Union's standard were minted in Paris and transported to Athens under the supervision of French officials. The resumption of convertibility lasted only nine months, and from September 1885, a quarter-century of inconvertibility followed. A silver coin of the same weight as the franc did not yet command the same confidence.
