100 Mun coin

Issued in the 11th month of 1866 (the 3rd year of King Gojong's reign) by order of the Daewongun. To finance the reconstruction of Gyeongbok Palace and military expenditures, it was denominated at 100 times the value of a 1 Mun Sangpyeong Tongbo. Its intrinsic value was only five to six times higher, and grain prices soared by approximately six times. It was demonetized in the 4th month of the following year, 1867, having been in circulation for only about six months. The characters '戸' (Ho) and '當百' (Dangbaek) on the reverse indicate its mintage by the Hojo and its nominal value of 100.
