Silver 20 Kuruş Mecidiye

The silver 20 kuruş coin, introduced with the Tashih-i Sikke (Correction of Coinage) reform of 1844. Its specifications were approximately 24 grams, .830 fineness, and 36.8 mm in diameter, equivalent to one-fifth of a gold lira. Named after Sultan Abdülmecid, it was called the Mecidiye. The obverse features the tughra surrounded by stars. It was the face of reform, a daily proof of the promise of correction held in the palm of one's hand.
