A silver rupee issued by the French East India Company at the Arcot Mint. The coin was struck in the name of the Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II, dated AH 1221, regnal year 45, with the couplet "Saya-e-Fazl-e-Ilahi". Although issued by a European company, the coin bears the name of the Mughal Emperor. Those who accepted the silver trusted not the company, but the coin bearing the emperor's name. The company chose to borrow this credibility.
