A one Thaler silver coin of Wilhelm IX, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel, 1789. The obverse features the Landgrave's portrait and the inscription WILHELMUS IX; the reverse shows the coat of arms and the words EIN THALER. As Crown Prince, Wilhelm met Mayer Amschel through General von Estorff and became a regular customer for old coins. Records state that the first invoice, dated June 1765, was for thirty-eight gulden and some change. When he became Landgrave in 1785, this coin dealer took over the exclusive management of his fortune. This is a coin bearing the Landgrave's own name, from an era when each old coin added to the castle's coin cabinet also added a line to the ledger.
