In 1864, backed by the military intervention of Napoleon III, Maximilian of the House of Habsburg was installed as Emperor of Mexico. This emperor left a landmark in monetary history. In 1866, he issued a coin inscribed for the first time with the denomination "UN PESO"—one peso. The obverse featured the emperor's portrait and the legend "MAXIMILIANO EMPERADOR", with a fineness of 0.903 and a weight of 27.07 grams. Decimal notation thus made its formal entry into the world of the 8 reales. It was an imposed accounting for an imposed empire.
