In 1910, a one-peso silver coin with a new design was issued. This is the silver coin known as the "Caballito." It was the face of the new peso, reborn after the 1905 monetary reform that abandoned the silver standard. And in that very same year, the Mexican Revolution began. The long regime of Díaz, which had championed "Order and Progress" through railways, foreign investment, and mining exports, was on the verge of collapse just as it witnessed the final touches of its monetary system. This combination of the gleam of a new silver coin and an impending civil war is a recurring pattern in this country's monetary history.
