WILHELM DEUTSCHER KAISER KÖNIG V. PREUSSEN — a twenty-mark gold coin cut with the portrait of the emperor Wilhelm I. The back carries the eagle of the new empire and the date 1873. It is gold of the very year the coinage law defined the mark. On the foundation of the 5 billion francs of indemnity paid by defeated France, the young empire designed a new currency on the gold standard. Thaler and gulden were called in, and the forest of coinages was replaced by this measure of gold. The height of the brilliance of a Germany, divided for a thousand years, made one through money.
