The macuta was originally a unit of cloth money in Angola; Portugal kept the name and struck a coinage reserved for the colony. On its face, the same crowned arms as the mother country; its name, a local unit. Reckoned apart from the réis of the metropole, it shows one empire holding money zones of unequal value—a pattern that would last into the colonial escudo of the twentieth century.
