Aspron trachy of Theodore I Laskaris of the Empire of Nicaea, attributed to c. 1212–1221. Struck in Magnesia, silver, 4.26 grams, 35 mm diameter. Even after the Fourth Crusade sacked Constantinople in 1204, the monetary system was carried on by the government-in-exile. Nicaea continued to issue the hyperpyron, but its fineness declined to 18 carats. This silver coin, with its prominent bowl-shaped curve, is a relic from a time when the empire, having lost its capital, continued to strike coinage.
