Ten-dollar gold certificate (1928 series)
1928 series ・ paper ・ 20th century ・ United States Treasury

A gold seal and gold serial numbers, the portrait of Hamilton, and one line along the lower edge — 'IN GOLD COIN PAYABLE TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND'. It is a ten-dollar gold certificate of the 1928 series. Paper exchangeable for gold deposited with the Treasury — but the promise ended five years later. In 1933 Executive Order 6102 forbade private holding of gold as a rule, and the Gold Reserve Act of the following year moved the price of gold from $20.67 an ounce to $35 — the dollar was devalued against gold, and the gold clauses in bonds were made void. This paper remembers the last days of gold convertibility at home, its golden seal unchanged.
