A classification of currency based on features such as design, legend, denomination, and issuing authority.

Instead of looking at coins one by one, we group and count those with the same characteristics. Once grouped, we can compare how many of each type were produced.

⚠ A group of coins struck from the same die is not a type. That is a more detailed matter, belonging to the study of dies. Within a single type, there can be many sets of dies.
