In the twelfth century, the cities of Bruges, Ghent, and Ypres grew rapidly with the woolen cloth industry, weaving English wool that arrived from across the sea.

Around 1275, a large silver coin, the groat (groot), was struck, modeled on the French gros tournois, raising the monetary denomination by an order of magnitude. In 1339, a monetary agreement was made with Brabant to strike coins of a common type. In 1384, Philip the Bold acquired the county through marriage, beginning the integration of the Low Countries by the House of Burgundy.

⚠ The war of Philip IV with Flanders was one of the expenses that led to the debasement of coinage from 1296.
