It shows how the cost of a fixed basket of household purchases changes with prices. In Japan, it is produced by the Statistics Bureau of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, and in the United States, by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It is also used for pension adjustments. It serves as a yardstick for converting nominal amounts into real terms.
