The better the condition, the more legible the details of the engraving. ⚠ However, the idea that 'good condition = high value' is a matter for the market; for research, a worn-out piece can be evidence of having been 'well-used'.

What can be determined from a photograph is limited to whether the engraving remains, the edge is not chipped, and the lettering is legible. ⚠ It is difficult to judge from a photograph how the metal surface is damaged or whether it has been polished later. One needs to handle the actual object or have photographs taken from multiple angles. There is a limit to what can be said from a single published photograph.
