- At the Great Closing Ceremony on December 29, 1989, the Nikkei Stock Average reached an all-time high of 38,915 yen. The annual growth rate for 1989 was 29%, and at the time, there was optimistic sentiment that '50,000 yen is only a matter of time'.
- Following the Plaza Accord of September 1985, due to economic measures to counter the strong yen and monetary easing by the Bank of Japan, the Nikkei Average more than tripled in four years and three months.
