Claims Supported by This Source

  1. Dated May 2, 1716. Preamble: Law had proposed a bank several months prior to be run in the King's name with the King's funds, which was deliberated by the Council of Finances but rejected as the times were not favorable. Instead, he requested to establish a bank with his own and his company's funds to "increase the circulation of money, put a stop to usury, supplement the transport of specie between Paris and the provinces, provide a safe place for foreigners' funds, and facilitate the payment of taxes" (f3–f4).
  2. Law sought a 20-year privilege and permission to contract in écus de banque, which are "always of the same weight and fineness and not subject to any variation," and requested the appointment of inspectors to stamp the notes and countersign the books (f4).
  3. Article 1: Law and his company alone shall have the right to establish a general bank in the kingdom on their own account and to operate it for 20 years from the day of registration. The books and notes shall be denominated in specie écus under the name "écus de banque" (f5).
