Dongguk Tongbo

The inscription reads "Dongguk Tongbo". This is a copper coin minted by the Goryeo dynasty, which called itself the "Country of the East". Theories on its minting date place it in the reigns of either King Seongjong or King Sukjong (the full range is given here). It is one coin in the lineage of state coinage that began with the establishment of the Jujeon Dogam (the mint) in 1097 and continued with the Haedong Tongbo in 1102. This piece is in the collection of the National Museum of Korea.
