Sultani Gold Coin (Suleiman I)

A sultani gold coin of Suleiman I (reigned 1520–66). It is a gold coin struck by the Ottomans in their own name, with the space inside the dotted border filled with standard phrases of victory and sovereignty. The silver akçe circulated in daily life, while the gold sultani spoke of the empire's prestige—it was the upper tier of a two-tiered currency system. The name of the mint, Kostantiniyye, can be read on the coin's face.
