Akçe of Orhan
c. 1327 ・ silver ・ 14th century ・ Bursa

The Akçe, an early Ottoman silver coin. This type was struck by Orhan around 1327 (some theories suggest 1328), and its standard is recorded as a weight of approximately 1.14 grams and a silver content of 90%. The inscription reads "Orhan, son of Osman". This marks the point at which a small border principality asserted its sovereignty through its coinage.
