100 Gulden note (1863)(obverse)

A 100 Gulden note from the Austrian National Bank, dated 1863. Allegorical figures from a copperplate engraving adorn the border of this mainstay of paper currency from before the Krone. In the reform of 1892, the rate was set at 1 Gulden = 2 Kronen, and the world of this note gave way to the new unit. A piece from an era when the style of a banknote was the very face of national credit.
