A pattern for the first banknotes in the Habsburg lands, issued in the name of the Wiener Stadt-Banco. The motivation was to finance the Seven Years' War. This was seven years earlier than Russia's Assignatsiya. Initially, they could be used for tax payments, were exchangeable for specie, and functioned soundly. The chapter on 1811 tells where the lineage of this paper money would lead half a century later.
