A silver Tanka of the Delhi Sultanate, struck in the name of Nasiruddin Mahmud Shah. The Tanka was the name for the silver coin established by this dynasty, and the later Rupee is a continuation of this standard. The coin face is filled with text: the name of the issuer, the name of the suzerain, and a testimony of faith. The dynasty guaranteed the weight and purity of the silver, and this guarantee was proclaimed in writing. This format would continue as the standard for silver coinage on the subcontinent for three hundred years.
