1 Rupee of the East India Company (Continuous Legend)

An East India Company one rupee silver coin issued in 1840, of the continuous legend type. A silver coin bearing the name of a private enterprise—a company—was current throughout almost the entire subcontinent. After the standard was unified by the Act of 1835, this silver coin gradually pushed the coinage of the various native dynasties and mints out of the market. Its silver weight and fineness continued the lineage of the rupees that preceded it. The only thing that changed was the name of the guarantor.
