The first paper money in Russia, issued by Catherine II. The motivation was the weight of copper coins and war expenses. Initially, there were four denominations: 25, 50, 75, and 100 rubles. The 75-ruble note was soon abolished due to frequent forgeries made by altering the number on 25-ruble notes. This paper money later acquired a different value from the silver ruble, and in 1839 the rate was fixed at 3.5 to 1.
