George III Sovereign 1817 (The Metropolitan Museum of Art)

Gold sovereign of George III, 1817. The obverse features the laureate head of the king, the reverse St. George and the Dragon. The Metropolitan Museum of Art's records describe it as gold, 23 mm in diameter, engraved by Benedetto Pistrucci, and a gift of the Peluso family in 2001. The business Nathan started at New Court in the City in 1809 was in foreign exchange and bullion. The archives state that Nathan invested the £550,000, which the head office in Frankfurt managed for the Landgrave, into British public bonds and bullion. This gold coin was struck in the same city and during the same period as that business.
