Gold bar (Banque de France exhibition for the 2022 European Heritage Days)
Photographed in 2022 ・ gold ・ 21st century ・ Banque de France (exhibition)
A gold bar exhibited at the Banque de France on European Heritage Days in September 2022. A close-up of the stamped face reveals the markings: PAMP SA, SWITZERLAND, 2022-06, 999.9, and the number C053964. From 1919 to 2004, the price of gold was fixed in a room at New Court, London. Five seats around a table, representatives of the five members, and a flag. What the flag signaled is not recorded in the account. Nor is there a single line in the account about how the price was determined after the fixing moved from the room to a screen. Who decides, where, and on what basis? The markings indicate purity and a number, not a price.
