An age in which a country that had executed Charles I felt its way toward money without a king. At the end of it appeared this portrait coin of the Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell. A bust in the manner of a Roman emperor, wearing a laurel wreath, with the legend OLIVAR D G R ANG SCO HIB &c PRO. The man who had abolished the king was cut into silver in a king's likeness. The age of this coin ended with the Restoration, but few pieces speak so plainly of money as a mirror of the sovereign.
