Muera Huerta Silver Coin

Revolutions produce not only paper but also memorable silver coins. In 1914, a peso silver coin struck in territory controlled by the Villistas bore the inscription "MUERA HUERTA"—Death to Huerta. This cry for the death of the enemy general Huerta was engraved directly onto the currency. Because its value was underpinned by the silver itself, a coin could be inscribed with anything and still stand as currency. In an age when paper money was becoming worthless, silver remained silver, even when engraved with a cry of death.
