8 Reales of Agustín I

In 1821, through the Plan of Iguala and the Treaty of Córdoba, Mexico achieved independence from Spain. The following year, 1822, its key figure, Iturbide, was enthroned as Emperor Agustín I. The obverse of the new 8 reales was engraved with the emperor's portrait and a Latin inscription meaning "Agustín by the Providence of God". However, the empire that invoked divine providence collapsed in March 1823. After three hundred years of the king's coinage came two years of the emperor's coinage.
