Durango Eight Reales

The royalist side was no different in its hunger for currency during wartime. On October 8, 1810, Commander Salcedo successively authorized provisional coinage in three locations: Chihuahua, Durango, and Sombrerete. With the capital cut off from the silver mining regions by the rebellion, the northern front had to be supported by northern currency. The provisional mint in Durango began operations on February 1, 1811. The piece shown is an eight reales from 1821 bearing the name of Ferdinand VII.
