A 1000 lire note of the lira's last generation. The portrait is the educator Maria Montessori; on the back, children learning. A thousand lire had once been a fortune; by now it bought about a cup of coffee. Digits are the scars inflation leaves. In 2002 this paper too was withdrawn for the euro.
