A large silver coin of high fineness born in the time of Enrico Dandolo, the old doge who launched the Fourth Crusade. St Mark handing the banner to the doge shows a coin guaranteed not by a king but by the city's patron saint. Into a world of blackened denari, silver fit for merchants' settlements had returned.
