In 1943, with the landings in Sicily, the Allies brought in a military lira as legal tender. Two systems of paper circulating beside the Banca d'Italia's notes became one driver of ferocious inflation. In a country with two issuers of money, prices do not stay quiet—this is the physical evidence.
