Gold ducat

A knight standing with a bundle of arrows, and the legend CONCORDIA — concord. It is a gold coin for seaborne trade, established in 1586 while the war of independence was still going on. It went on holding its standard not for daily use at home but for settlement beyond the sea, and in the century of Amsterdam as the world's investment bank it was that century's face. And today — this gold coin is still being struck at the Royal Dutch Mint. It is a case of credit outliving the institution that made it, and one of the oldest trade coins still in service. This piece is a double gold ducat struck in 1772.
