Twenty-franc gold coin of Louis-Philippe

A 20-franc gold coin of the July Monarchy, in the line of the piece known as the napoléon. The face is the profile of Louis-Philippe, the back '20 FRANCS 1847' framed in laurel. It was struck to the Germinal standard laid down by Napoleon I, with the emperor's profile replaced by the citizen king's. France in the 1840s was in a fever of railways and speculation in bonds and shares, and this is the gold of an age when the vote was settled by a tax payment of two hundred francs a year, and property was the condition of citizenship.
