Morabitino gold coin
Sancho I (late 12th–early 13th century) ・ gold ・ 12th century ・ Kingdom of Portugal
On the obverse, a king rides with sword raised. One of the earliest gold coins of the young kingdom of Portugal, its name morabitino derives from the Almoravid dinar of the Islamic south. The model and the gold both came from the south; only the name struck on it belonged to the new king. Frontier money begins like this.
