Final escudo banknote series

The last banknote series of the escudo carries the figures of the Age of Discovery: John II on the 500, Vasco da Gama on the 5000. For its final edition, a national currency eight hundred years old chose the summit of its own story. In 2002 the notes were withdrawn from circulation, and the unit itself passed into history.
