Keichō koban (oval gold piece)

The gold coin of the Edo shogunate, laid down by Tokugawa Ieyasu. An oval plate of gold carrying brush-written ink and struck punches — a form found nowhere else in the world. This is a photograph of an actual piece excavated at the site in Ginza 6-chōme.
